Now, you could argue that this is because they’re all sisters. Edith looks a bit unique because they gave her a different body type, but other than that… Yeah it’s kind of like they used a base for them. The first thing you’ll notice is that outside of a few small differences, four out of five of them look almost exactly the same. I excluded Voodoo Mama because she didn’t have a sprite in this pose, so it wouldn’t be as easy to compare her with the others. In the image below, I took the time to trace over their sprites and take away their hair and accessories. Now, with all that in mind, let’s take a look at the nymphs. The way he stands, the way he walks, the way he runs in place with his tongue sticking out if the player holds the sprint button without moving, it all tells us about his quirky and upbeat personality. Rayman himself especially so (skins and characters from the first game aside). Now, the characters in Rayman are all pretty distinct. My main point is, if you want to make your character look unique, they gotta have a unique silhouette
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule and character design can be used to deliberately deceive the viewer, but I’m not gonna get into all that here. If a character is designed well, you should be able to tell a lot about them from a single glance. It’s how your character stands out in a lineup. I don’t know a lot about character design, but what I do know is that silhouettes are a pretty big deal. Now, with all that out of the way, let’s get down to it. This is all my personal opinion on this matter, so take this with a grain of salt.

And if you were there for when I would go off on people, here is my message to you: I am very sorry.Īnd now for the disclaimer: As much as I wish I was, I am not a professional character designer. I’m not gonna hunt you down and eat your shoes or anything. If you feel differently about this subject, that’s fine. Now that my circumstances have changed and my mental state has calmed down a bit, hopefully I won’t be so volatile about this. I had a huge chip on my shoulder about the whole thing, and I would fly off the handle quite easily. In the past, when debating about this subject, I’ve been… What’s the word? A massive dick. I’m not going to beat around the bush here. Since this will inevitably be a very long piece, I’m going to put this under a readmore so I don’t clog up your dashboard.
But since ranting about it constantly obviously won’t satisfy me, I’ve decided to make a comprehensive piece on how I feel. P.S.So, if you’re a friend of mine, or if you’ve talked to me or read a post I’ve made about this subject at all, you probably know how i feel about the designs of the nymphs in Rayman Origins. It is questionable, disturbing, vexing what next? Will everybody else except for Rayman vanish again for 16 years, banished to the void, waiting in cold darkness for someone at Ubisoft to rescue them? WHAT TERRIBLE ENTITY IS DOING THIS?! SO WHAT HAPPENED TO BETTILA? I take my fictional universes and characters seriously, it seems odd that the protector of the great Protoon, and one of the oldest and most beloved of the Bubble Dreamer's creations would just completely vanish without even a passing mention. except Betilla (and slightly less importantly the rest of the nymphs) And not only are Betilla and the other nymphs gone, the very mention of their existence seems to have been wiped wholly from the face of the Rayman scape. One of the great things about Rayman Origins was that besides all the amazing graphics, sweeet levels and glorious fun, was that after 16 years of baffling absence, all the characters from the first Rayman that I had long been missing had finally returned the Magician! the electoons! Betilla! those stone guys! Finally the world of Rayman had been brought together! So all well and good I think, but then moving onto Legends everyone is back again. SO HEY THERE SOMEONE WHO MAY KNOW Recently I have wrapped up playing through Rayman origins (outstanding game, the world is better for it's existence) and am moving on to Rayman Legends, but I am wanting to know what happened to Betilla and the other nymphs, as they seem absent from Legends.
